Chapter 17

Zinnia

Nova clapped her hands together. “Woohoo.” She placed two fingers in her mouth and whistled.

Ophelia lifted up both of her hands and flipped off Nova while running out to meet us. “Shut up.”

“That was some kiss.” I wanted to hug her the way a sister might, throw my arm around her shoulder and pull her in close to find out exactly what just happened between her and Cross. Instead, I held off, not knowing what exactly to do. It seemed like so long ago when I made the deal for her to stay in Evermore Academy in exchange for her silence about our family connections. The more time I spent with Ophelia, the more I felt I needed to tell everyone she was my sister. Another secret to take care of.

“Ugh, both of you shut up.” She waved me toward the hallway Matteaus just disappeared into. “Let’s go.”

I grabbed her arm stopping her. “Are you sure we shouldn’t just ask him?”

“Right because he’s going to let us pluck him like a chicken.” Sarcasm dripped from her every word. “Would you come on already. I promise this will work.”

The three of us tiptoed after him. I pressed my hand over my mouth to suppress my laughter. I hadn’t done anything like this since I was a kid.

Ophelia pointed at a black feather on the ground. “Look, there’s one.”

I bent down and quickly scooped it up. “Do you think one will be enough?”

The feather had an oily sheen to it, and when I ran my fingers over it, it felt like nothing I’d ever touched before. It was the softest cotton, the smoothest silk and lighter than air. “I expected this to be like a raven feather. But just feel this.”

I held the feather out toward them.

Nova brushed her fingers over it, and her eyes went wide. “Wow, we definitely need more.”

Ophelia pressed her hand to it. “Even if we don’t need more for the potion, we definitely need more. I think I could make a dress out of this.”

“I think he went that way.” I pointed down the hall and around the corner. “Let’s see if we can find some extras.” This was one of the first missions I went on that wasn’t life or death, the first time I felt like a teenager on a scavenger hunt. Next up, steal a pair of Tuck’s underwear.

A breeze drifted down the hall, and another black feather tumbled over the stone floor toward us. Nova dove to the ground and snatched it up. “Mine.”

Ophelia grabbed my hand and tugged me forward. “Come on. I want one too.”

We were jogging around other students and laughing the way we might’ve done had we grown up together as real sisters. When I glanced at Ophelia, her face went from beaming like a little kid to wide-eyed. Before I could look forward, I slammed into a brick wall. Wait. No, not a wall. Someone’s torso. My face mushed into his ribcage, and the air whooshed from my lungs.
